Some people claim that public museums and art galleries will be no longer necessary because people can see historical objects and works of art by using a computer. Do you agree or disagree?
Many believe that public museums and art galleries will be no longer necessary because using computer or television to see the historical artificial and art works is likely to become popular nowadays. While i think seeing them by computer has tendency in digital era, I still believe that these places are necessary.
It is true that there are some benefits staying at home to watch artifacts and art exhibition. First, the most convenience is to easily see these screens by using laptop with internet connection. For example, living in Vietnam people can access the sites that are the official websites of public museums and art galleries in everywhere such as USA, Canada or European Union. Another reason worth mentioning is that watching at home helps to save money. In fact, last time when the computer science and information technology hasn’t yet developed, in order to seeing them, people have to pay a lot of money such as fight ticket, hotel fee and entrance ticket.
Nevertheless, I do not agree that it is no longer necessary of public museums and art galleries. The first reason to be given is that experiencing the artifacts in public museum and art exhibition in galleries is more worthwhile than watching in screen. In fact, visiting on there, people can have connection with past and current, feel the historical environment, listen the stories, even touch on them. Moreover, museums and art galleries keep the cultural and traditional value which helps develop the tourism industry. For example, the victory museum in Ho Chi Minh city often guest many foreigner tourists when they visit city.
In conclusion, despite the fact that people can see historical objects and works of art by using a computer, I am of the opinion that public museums and art galleries are necessary.
- Arm-chair tourism: du
lị ch qua ghế (qua Internet)
- Appear to be a short- sighted view: có vẻ như là mộ t ý kiế n thiể n cậ n
- Historical objects =
- Work of art = artwork = artistic creation
- Sense the emotions and stories: cả m nhậ n đư ợ c nhữ ng cả m xúc và câu chuyệ n
- Play an essential part: là mộ t phầ n thiế t yế u
- Regardless of situations: dù gì chăng nữ a
- Cultural traditional symbols: biể u tư ợ ng văn hóa truyề n thố ng
- Obsolete (adj) = outdated
- The advent of technology: sự xuấ t hiệ n củ a công nghệ
In recent years, the advent of the Internet has allowed people to see historical objects and artworks online, and some suggest the existence of museums and art galleries is obsolete and unnecessary. From my perspective, I completely disagree with this view.
It is understandable why some suggest arm-chair tourism can replace museums and art galleries. One of the compelling reasons could be time-saving. By sitting in front of computer screen, viewers can choose whatever they want to see just in a click of the mouse without travelling to destinations. However, it appears to be a short-sighted view as it ignores unique experience of seeing artworks and historical objects in real. In fact, unlike only watching images on the computer screen, a visit to museums and exhibition allows spectators to not only see artistic creations and historical items at different angles but also sense the emotions and stories behind those works.
Another rationale behind my belief is that museums and art galleries still play an essential part in people’s lives regardless of situations. Besides offering real experience, many museums and art galleries are both the pride of local communities where these places are located and cultural traditional symbols of a nation. Therefore, there is no way that they would become obsolete just because of the development of technology. Also to be considered is that museums and exhibition have contributed greatly to the economic development. For example, the Vietnamese war museum has appealed thousands of visitors annually, either domestic or international, which helps urge the local economy tremendously.
In conclusion, despite the appearance of arm-chair tourism, I still hold the belief that museums and art galleries are still needed.
