Whether taking advantage of cutural conventions to attract tourists should be promoted has been a controversial topic. Although some suppose this action can damage traditional cultures and values, I am of the opinion that it protects rather than destroys such cultural traditions.
It is understandable why some hold the belief that cultural traditions should not become commercialised. First, they suppose that when aiming at tourists and making money, people put more emphasis on how to attract more visitors and earn more money regardless of making cultural traditional symbols lose its originality and uniqueness. For example, the Vietnamese Lion Dancing, a traditional folk dance, has recently been performed by amateurs instead of martial artists to serve foreign visitors, making the dance less unique and attractive. Another concern could be the damage to traditionally sacred sites when they are exposed too much to visitors. Taking pagodas and templates in Vietnam as an example, many visitors did permanent damage by craving their names or words on old walls, even on God statues.
Nevertheless, I still side with those who believe that modifying cultural traditions to some extent for commercialization is still more beneficial. One of justifications is that it could not be the best way but a feasible measure to shield such cultures from disappearance. If not maintained and performed for tourism, the Lion Dance would be disappeared for years, let alone help locals earn a better livelihood. Furthermore, the revenue generated from culture-based tourism can be used for refurbishments and preservation. Thanks to welcoming and receiving funds from visitors, Vietnamese pagodas and templates have budget to not only refurbish their building but also allocate to charitable activities.
In conclusion, despite drawbacks of merging culture and tourism, benefits of it are still far more significant, especially when it comes to protecting such traditions.
