In recent years, there has been a growing trend towards using electronic books, raising many discussions among the public. Although many might suggest this trend is a positive development, there are not without drawbacks of using e-books that should not be neglected.
On the one hand, reading books on electronic devices can have many benefits. One of them is helping readers save a great amount of money. This stems from the fact that prices of printed books are often higher than e-books as there are costs of publishing. Another benefit could be that readers can carry thousands of books besides them while all they need to do is to have an e-reader or an electronic device. For example, possessing a Kindle, one of the most popular electronic devices for reading, can allow readers to not only access to a huge online library with different kinds of books all around the world but also bring them to everywhere they want.
On the other hand, there are also several detrimental effects of using e-books. What appears the most obvious is to put a strain on the readers’ eyes. Since electronic devices emit blue light from their screens, if readers use them excessively for reading purpose, they would have higher tendency to suffer from short sight. Furthermore, there are feelings that only reading paper books can give. In fact, many avid readers agree that holding a hardcover book, flipping through its pages, or even just smelling the book can bring them joy and fulfillment, which is lack in digital books.
In conclusion, despite the fact that the emergence and development of e-books have brought many benefits to readers, there are still several drawbacks that need to be put into consideration. |
