In recent years, media coverage of pressing matters and emergencies has become more prevalent. Although some might argue that this trend brings detrimental effects on individuals and society, benefits of it are far more significant.

It is understandable why some people think focusing on reporting problems and emergencies is harmful. One of reasons could be that if bad news is revealed too much, this would make audience more pessimistic. For example, when criminal or violent activities appear frequently on newspapers or media streams, this could make people scared and only see negative sides about life. However, it would appear to be a nonsense if media was forced to stop delivering issues and emergencies just because of people’s fear. This is because not everyone is scared and pessimistic when reading criminal news, the fact is that many of them just become more cautious about life to avoid falling victim to crime.

Furthermore, other enormous benefits of this practice should also be put into consideration. First, by reporting natural disasters and pandemics, millions of lives could be saved. Taking the Covid-19 pandemic as an example, reports of death tolls, geography restrictions or safety instructions have been found every on newspapers and media platforms, which does help not only warn people to stay at home but also assist governments to control the situation. On a larger scale, reporting alarming issues and emergencies can help raise people’s awareness and involve them in tackling these problems. For instance, by broadcasting illegal hunting on television, the issue has been ameliorated significantly in Vietnam as more and more citizens have understood deeper about benefits of preserving biodiversity, and some of them have even become activists shielding animal rights.

In conclusion, despite some minor negative impacts of media coverage of issues and emergencies, I still believe that it still does more good than harm.
